This means that its outside electron shell is filled with electrons. Helium is one of the inert or noble gases. Helium is the only element that does not solidify under ordinary pressures and remains a liquid even at absolute zero. It has very low boiling and melting points, meaning that it is generally found in the gas phase except under the most extreme of conditions. It is at the top of the noble gas group in the periodic table.Īt room temperature helium is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas. Helium is the second lightest and second most common element in the universe. Classification: A noble gas and a nonmetal.Neutral helium at standard conditions is non-toxic, plays no biological role and is found in trace amounts in human blood. Check oxygen content before entering area. Inhalation risk: On loss of containment this gas can cause suffocation by lowering the oxygen content of the air in confined areas. Health effects of heliumĮffects of exposure: The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation. Helium is the 71st most abundant element in the Earth's crust where it is found in 8 parts per billion (10 9). Natural gases contain higher helium concentrations than the atmosphere. There is an about 1000 km layer in the heterosphere at 600 miles where helium is the dominant gas (although the total pressure is very low). Nevertheless, its low molecular weight allows it to escape to space at the same rate of its formation. It could be logical to think that the helium concentration in the atmosphere was higher than it is (5,25 parts per million at sea level). Most of this helium migrates to the surface and enters the atmosphere. Helium is formed in The Earth by natural radioactive decay of heavier elements. Helium constitutes the 23% of all elemental matter measured by mass. Helium is the second most abundant element in the known universe, after hydrogen. Other applications are its use as pressurizing gas in liquid propellants for rockets, in helium- oxygen mixtures for divers, as working fluid in nuclear reactors cooled down by gas and as gas carrier in chemical analysis by gas chromatography. The main application of ultralow temperature is in the development of the superconductivity state, in which the resistance to the electricity flux is almost zero. Helium is the only cooler which is capable of reaching temperatures lower than 15 K (-434✯). Its biggest potential is found in applications at very low temperatures. The main use of helium is as an inert protection gas in autogenous welding. This application goes on in altitude research and for meteorological balloons. Helium was the first gas used for filling balloons and dirigibles. Helium has many unique properties: low boiling point, low density, low solubility, high thermal conductivity and inertness, so it is use for any application which can explioit these properties. Helium can be liquefied, but its condensation temperature is the lowest among all the known substances. The thermic conductivity and the caloric content are exceptionally high. The density and viscosity of helium vapour are very low. It’s the less reactive element and doesn’t essentially form chemical compounds. It’s less soluble in water than any other gas. Helium is a colourless, odourless, insipid and non-toxic gas. The main helium source in the world is a series of fields of natural gas in the United States. Helium is one of the noble gases of group O in the periodic table. Gaseous chemical element, symbol: He, atomic number: 2 and atomic weight 4,0026 g/mol. This type of letter is called a puzzle-initial because of the blank space between the red and the blue colors, which creates a puzzle-like appearance. Because the letter is larger and more elaborately decorated than the previous D and E, viewers can assume that it marks an important moment within the text. In contrast to the previous two colored borders, this third one, from De Pictura, which depicts a large seven-line O, also includes the color green. Designs such as these sometimes fully surround the page, and sometimes they decorate only part of the page, as these do. For example, swirling linear designs, called “penwork flourishing,” encompass this D and this E from the 15th-century Italian Book of Hours. Slightly more elaborate letters than the I and the O are surrounded by linear borders. These differences help to divide the page into recognizable segments and thereby increase the legibility of a page that has no lowercase letters and no punctuation. The I and the O are not only slightly larger than the single-line, colored letters on the page they also include decorations inside the letters. Size variation indicated hierarchical variation: the larger the letter, the more important the moment in the text.įor example, the two pages seen here, an initial O and an initial I, from Alberti’s De Pictura, depict colored letters that are only a little larger than one line or two lines of the regular text. Some are the same size as the surrounding black text, whereas others occupy an entire page. The illuminated letters in medieval manuscripts vary in size. In these four texts, the two most frequently used colors for script are red and blue scribes more commonly wrote in red ink, which may be because the composition of red ink allowed it to flow more easily than blue. Colored initials appear in all four of the manuscripts described here. Illumination in these four texts can be divided into three categories: colored initials, ornately designed initials and miniature paintings. Although these texts span more than a hundred years and several countries, they demonstrate striking similarities that indicate artistic patterns in the Middle Ages. Four notable examples include an early-14th-century French breviary fragment two Books of Hours, one the Italian Office of the Virgin from the 15th century, and one a 15th-century text from the Netherlands and a 1485 copy of De Pictura (“On Painting”) written by Leon Battista Alberti between 14. Farber University Archives and Special Collections Department at Brandeis houses several medieval manuscripts that depict beautiful examples of illumination. Changing the speed however, is a different story. To reverse the direction in which the DC motor rotates you simply reverse the polarity of the DC current that you apply to it. Common hobbyist motors run at 6 Volts or 12 volts DC. Most quadcopter Motors are brushless motors.ĭC motors are specified by the voltage level at which they operate. Because they do not contain brushes these brushless motors will last longer and are also much quieter than brushed DC motors. The moving part of the motor is connected to the permanent magnet. Brushless motors use a more complex arrangement of coils and do not require a commutator. Brushes, however, create many problems – they can start to wear over time, they rub against the motor shaft and they can even cause sparking as the motor gets older.īetter quality DC motors are the brushless variety. The motor I have just described is referred to as a brushed DC motor because (obviously) it has brushes. This process repeats itself indefinitely until the current is removed from the armature coils. This is great because at this point the motor shaft has rotated 180 degrees and the magnetic field polarities need to be reversed for the motor to continue rotating. At that point the brushes come into contact with the other half of the commutator rings, reversing the polarity of the armature coil (or coils, most modern DC motors have several). The motor shaft rotates until it arrives at the junction between the two halves of the commutator. This field is attracted to the stator magnet (remember, opposite magnetic polarities attract, similar ones repel) and the motor shaft begins to spin. When DC is applied to the commutator rings it flows through the armature coil, producing a magnetic field. Direct Current of a suitable voltage is applied to the commutator rings via two “brushes” that rub against the rings. The two pieces of the commutator rings are connected to each end of the armature coil. The armature is connected to a DC power source using a 2-piece ring installed around the motor shaft, these ring sections are called “commutator rings”. The armature, which is the rotating part, is a simple coil. The stator is a permanent magnet and provides a constant magnetic field. In a simple DC motor there are two main components, the “stator” and the “armature”. Today we’ll examine a very common H-Bridge module based around the L298N integrated circuit. An “H-Bridge” is an arrangement of transistors that allow you to control both the direction and speed of the motor. A single transistor can be used to drive a DC motor, this works well providing you do not need to change the direction that the motor is spinning.Ī more versatile way of controlling a DC motor is to use a circuit called an “H-Bridge”. There are a number of ways to drive a DC motor from the output of your computing device. It is necessary to use some external electronics to drive and control the motor, and you’ll probably need a separate power supply as well. DC motors have current and voltage requirements that are beyond the capabilities of your microcontroller or microcomputer. Unlike LED’s you can’t just connect a DC motor to one of the output pins of your Arduino or Raspberry Pi and expect it to work. They are inexpensive and are ideal for use in your Robotics, Quadcopter, and Internet of Things projects. Today DC motors range from huge models used in industrial equipment to tiny devices that can fit in the palm of your hand. Since then DC motors have been part of countless pieces of equipment and machinery. The first practical DC (Direct Current) motor was invented by the British scientist William Sturgeon in 1832. We welcome purple martins to our neighborhoods as people have done since the days when ancient Indians welcomed the birds to their villages by providing hollowed-out gourds for nesting accommodations. Martins are graceful, acrobatic flyers whose arrival to breed in backyard colonial nest boxes reminds us of spring's renewal of life. Males are entirely iridescent purple-blue, females differ with gray tones underneath and first-year males show purple splotches underneath. They represent the largest swallows of North America, at about 8-inches long with about a 15-inch wingspan and weighing 1.6 to 2.1 ounces - a golf ball weighs about 1.6 ounces. Most fly across the Gulf of Mexico, while others swoop over the landmass through Mexico, covering distances of up to 300-miles a day. Martins migrate from winter homes in Brazil and other parts of South America east of the Andes. First-year adult males will arrive with females and begin searching for unoccupied martin houses to begin their own martin colony.īreeding colonies raise chicks in apartment-styled wooden or aluminum houses placed in open areas of neighborhood yards or by lakes and ponds. It's time to ready the purple martin nest box.Īdult male martins - aka scouts - will be the first to arrive, as they survey the landscape for available houses where they'll match up with females arriving later to form breeding colonies. 1 Install a pre-constructed martin house or set of gourds available with poles at nature stores, like Wild Birds Unlimited, or at hardware and feed stores.Ģ Avoid painted wooden houses because the paint may be toxic.Ĥ Place house on a pole about 12-14–feet high in a clearing with an unobstructed flight path for martins.ĥ Routinely clear out any invading nests of house sparrows and European starlings.Ħ Martins feed almost entirely on flying insects, such as dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies and wasps, but rarely eat mosquitoes, despite common folklore. If you are a Monopoly die-hard but your friends are not in the mood for some Monopoly you can play against AI with 4 levels of difficulties or play against other Monopoly die-hards over the internet. The controls are pretty good and intuitive most of the time except when you are negotiating a deal and rolling the dice with joy cons feels just so satisfying.īoard games can last for hours, so I really liked that you can just save a game and pick up where you stopped a week later. It’s some fun but it is nothing spectacular but in its defense it is still just a board game. You can play with normal rules or play with challenges for example the first player that builds a hotel wins. You can choose to play on a classic board or 3 animated boards that make it look nicer. Gameplay wise Monopoly the game is the same a Monopoly the board game you are used to play. You hold it in landscape mode in which you usually hold it but because Monopoly is a rather passive game and you only have to use your controller when it is your turn so I think it would be more comfortable to hold it in portrait mode or at least have the option to choose between them. I think it’s cool that you have the option to choose from but I don’t like they way you have to hold the Joy Con. You have the option to choose if you want to use one control you give to the player who is at turn or you can all have a controller to avoid cheating if you don’t trust fellow players. While playing in tablet mode it really has the feel of playing a board game but everything is better organized. To be honest, I am not a big fan of board games: they take way too long, it takes too long until it is your turn, people can cheat… But when I saw the trailer for Monopoly I thought it could be the solution to fix the things I don’t like about board games. Then I got the perfect game you can play when you bring your Switch to a cosy game night: MONOPOLY. Mario Kart 8 DX is a perfect game for that but what if you want to play with people that are not really gamers for example your Parents-in-law. This allows you to take the Switch everywhere and play together with friends. You can play on your television like any normal console, you can play on the go without no compromises but the most unique way is when you play in tablet mode. The thing I love about it is that there are different ways to play it. Best value graphics tablet: XP-Pen Deco 01 v2.Best budget graphics tablet: Huion H420X.So, before you buy a graphics tablet, you need to have a clear idea of exactly what you need. What’s more, we’re now seeing hybrid “pen display” devices that are both a tablet and a screen, and while these can be amazing, the prices rise to some intimidating levels. However, tablets can be expensive, with prices rising up to £400 or more for pro-level models. Not only does a graphics tablet mimic traditional ways of working but it also allows you to work with a speed and precision that you’ll struggle to match in any other way. That’s why most digital artists and creatives reach first for a graphics tablet. Using a touchscreen might be better but only if equipped with a high-end stylus. By casting the document to another screen and then sharing the session, you can create a digital remote whiteboard. When you’re drawing, painting or retouching photos on a computer, a mouse is only going to get you so far. The ability to screen share any subbing, comments or changes to your document live on screen is a new feature that existing ReMarkable 2 users may find extremely useful. Screensharing great for remote workingĬollaborative work has never been more relevant with the hybrid working model now the standard model for many offices and studios. You can move to specific pages, but everything takes that extra click or menu selection compared to a Kobo or Kindle e-reader. Navigation within an ebook is not as intuitive compared to other e-readers in our test and, although you can choose to open up a document at the last point of a book, there are no bookmarks. It's now a more useful tool in the office environment, not just the creative studio. Adding the ability to access documents stored in the cloud on Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive with the latest update has significantly improved the collaborative performance of the ReMarkable 2. Its syncing technology is still best suited to sharing documents that you or others have created for collaborative work. However, mixed media ebooks with large illustrations and artwork display much better than on a traditional 6-inch display e-reader and truly show this device to be a tool for creativity and collaboration, rather than e-reading alone. It's a frustrating situation, one that hasn't changed with the latest update so the performance of the ReMarkable 2 as a standard e-reader remains the same. This means you can't read many of the more popular and latest release ebook titles available in online stores or from your local library. For example, while it supports Epub and PDF format, it doesn't allow ebooks with digital rights management (DRM), a form of copyright protection. Though the ReMarkable 2 does support ebooks, we found that buying, sharing or borrowing isn't as smooth as some other Kindle or Kobo models we've tested. But these updates don't fix the device's shortcomings as an e-reader. They also overcome some of the initial issues with collaboration and sharing, as you can now access documents in popular cloud storage apps directly from your tablet, including Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive. Recent updates deliver additional and valuable functionality, particularly with the ability to save and open different file formats. But the ReMarkable 2 has always been so much more than an e-reader – as a digital notepad and collaborative creative device, it performed very well. Though the extremely clear 10-inch display performed very well in direct sunlight, it wasn't so hot in other aspects like file sharing and support for Microsoft Office documents. We first tested the ReMarkable 2 in 2020 as a large-screen e-reader. But it feels like more of a digital sketch pad and less of an e-reader.Ĭontact: /store/remarkable-2 Recent updates have even improved its versatility, particularly for Google Drive and MS Office file sharing and support. The large thin tablet looks like a notepad and delivers a unique, realistic pen-on-paper feel when using the stylus. The ReMarkable 2 is extremely interesting as a drawing and collaboration device but it's not a great e-reader. |
